`1`provisional patent application (PPA) `2` "Nolo Everybody's Legal Dictionary":
The provisional patent application is a simple, inexpensive strategy to preserve your rights while you decide whether to file for a regular patent. It establishes an official U.S. patent application filing date for the invention and is much less expensive, and much easier to prepare, than a regular patent application. If a regular patent application is not filed within one year, the provisional patent application has no effect. The provisional patent application does not take the place of a regular patent application, but it does confer patent pending status on the underlying invention, which makes it easier for the inventor to find a potential manufacturer.
